The Cuban model of energy efficiency

· The model, presented by Professor Gironella to Spanish university students, is a clear example of how to get real savings and identify potential energy savings
· Aener Energia, a leading manufacturer of automatic capacitor banks, is one of three companies worldwide that have obtained approval for participation in the project of Cuba

Madrid, November 20, 2010. Professor Jorge Luis Gironella Fernandez, engineer of the Research and Electro Energetic Test Centre (CIPEL), Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Polytechnic Institute "Jose A. Echevarria" (ISPJAE) in Havana, visited Spain from the hand of Aener Energia to present to different audiences efficiency model developed in Cuba.

Thus, students of the University of Alcala de Henares and CITCEA of the Polytechnic University of Catalonia have seen the conference of “Reducing losses in distribution networks using reactive power compensation in industrial and services facilities of high incidence in the National Electro Energetic System (SEN ". In them, Prof. Gironella has expressed the need for short-term improvements in Cuban distribution networks by reducing energy and voltage losses, considering the results of the studies of reactive power compensation previously conducted by the CIPEL to large industrial or service consumers.

Purpose of the model: reducing energy losses in distribution and capacity release in lines and distribution transformers

The model is primarily aimed at reducing power losses in power distribution, thereby recovering generation capacity and distribution without new investment, and capacity release on lines and distribution transformers. Improving the voltage quality in those circuits that present energy losses, together with the elimination of electrical penalties in the electric bill of consumers that help reduce production costs and to contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, both local and national range has allowed S.E.N. and U.N.E. (Electric Union of Cuba) to get real savings and identify potential energy saving since 2005.

Installation of capacitors: reduced energy losses of electricity networks

The reduction of energy losses in Cuban distribution networks is one of the fundamental tasks that the country has been raised within the framework of the Energy Revolution.

Due to the impact on energy losses in electric networks and the impact on costs, installation of capacitors has been a recurring theme for the governments of the Cuban state. According to the study of Gironella, and from the technical point of view, the installation of capacitors, as close as possible to the load that consumes reactive power is the best solution and the most energy saving.

For this project, has counted on the participation of Aener Energia, only Spanish company among the three selected worldwide, who has installed 500 equipments approved by the UNE.

About Aener Energia

Aener Energia is a 100% Spanish company based in Madrid which was established in 1994, specialized in saving and power quality. Its main activities are focused on manufacturing of power capacitors, automatic capacitors banks and equipments for the network’s quality such as UPS’s and voltage stabilizers.

From the beginning, Aener Energia has been characterized by providing to the power factor correction market relevant aspects such as integrated product management and service and constant work of R&D+i. Its symbol of identity is the production of a high quality service and attention and personal relationship with its customers.

Aener Energia is member of AMEC-AMELEC and AECIM-CEIM, has got ISO9001-2008, DURE approval (Cuba) and IDAE recognition. It has also got the certification and approval of the Spanish Ministry of Defence and United Nations.
